“We do not hire, we help people to live a better life”

Connecting with heaven

This statement attributed to a Mukesh Kumar, of the UAE, attracted my attention on LikedIn this past week. The statement caught me by surprise, and as I thought about it, I started to wonder if hired people live worse lives. I even wondered; if this Kumar guy and his company don’t hire people, what do they do then to make people live better lives?

I believe that every sound person aspires to the day he/she can get hired and start to earn money to live a better life, right? Getting hired is the biggest step towards living a better life, as far as I know it. So if some company of people don’t hire, but help people live a better life, then there must be something better they are doing!

I started to ask, why a lot of people view being hired negatively. Words like controlled, enslaved, caged, in-servitude, imprisoned, directed… started to fling through my mind. Is it that most people hate what they do, or where they do it, or how they do it, or for whom they do it? Most of us have been there at some point, or even now.

Communication practitioners know the truth in Kumar’s statement, being largely creative people; like painters, dance exercise (Zumba) instructors, musicians, name them. Being hired and put in an 8hour-5day-11months; or 8hour-6days-11months a year routine can’t work for most of us. We appreciate freedom more than anything else – freedom to express ourselves and to be us, and see ourselves in what we do. We thrive in freedom, most of us.

Shoot into the skies!

But to thrive in freedom, we have to do many things; I pick my most favourite three:

• Pitch creativity way above the rest. There is no security in freedom. You give mediocre, you receive mediocre; you give excellence, you serve kings and presidents. Period.
• Create a niche. Identify, and be ready to do the work we love; isn’t that what we’re constantly seeking? Choose carefully that which gives us a tick doing and do it excellently. When you’re not hired, you swim better in the pool when you’re known for something.
• Be generous. We have share ourselves with others, rubbing our joy and satisfaction on them like olive oil. We have to encourage the world with our ability to get going; especially in these tough going times! My pastor used to say: “When you give with one hand, you release the other hand to receive more”, and creatives know that so well. Give of yourself and see what/who comes your way!
